Oak + Oar and Handcraft Creative are pleased to present the fifth instalment of Homegrown, a series dedicated to catching up with some of the local talent with ties to the city of Winnipeg. Though the concept of catching up with creative minds isn’t anything new, we hope to present some of the Homegrown talent in this city, province and country that might not yet be on your radar.

For episode five we arranged to meet up with former Canadian National Speed Skating Team member Scott Van Horne at the new home of VH Footwear. For Scott skates have always been a passion. So much so, that he began tinkering with skates at a very young age in his parents garage. Hours spent deconstructing and rebuilding gave him a great appreciate and understanding for fit, comfort and the mechanics of skates. This love for hands on creation and innovation resulted in a very successful venture into custom speed skates called VH Footwear. Over the past few years VH Footwear has manifested itself into a full fledged hockey skate business. Successfully carving out his space in the hockey skate market took years of experience and a little bit of luck and what came as a result are some of the most talked about skates on the market. Scott spends most of his days hoovered over the industrial sewing machine producing skates for some of the leagues most talented players including the likes of Jonas Hiller, Ryan Miller, Duncan Keith, Andrew Ladd, Mark Stuart, Blake Wheeler, Zach Bogosian and Dustin Byfuglien.
